I miss my 3D class, but am having fun taking Ceramics I at NOVA with Brad Birkhimer. We're learning the East Asian method for making coil pots. The assignment is to select a culture with a history of making pottery and research that culture and their pottery. I chose Mayan pottery from the Classic period of AD 600 - 900. My piece is a basic cylinder with a 3D iguana moving through the cylinder. On the side with its head, I will paint with cobalt oxide the legs of a Mayan warrior. On the opposite side with the iguana's hind legs and tail, I will paint the Warrior's upper body, so that it looks like half man and half iguana.
Here is my practice iguana head in plasticine clay.
