I painted the rest of my piece in white slip to brighten it because the natural clay will be darker and more of an earth tone. Then I painted the iguana with Pete's Weathered Bronze for a green color. Next I covered the green glaze with Marilee's Lava for a textured finish. I felt like I was painting blind, because I couldn't see the colors. I could only hope for the best.
The next step was to paint my Mayan warrior. I had thought I would use the Wedgewood Blue slip, so I practiced painting with slip in my sketchbook.

But then I was afraid I would need to cover the slip with a shiny clear glaze and I didn't want to do that. My professor, Brad Birkhimer, suggested I use an oxide to paint it on. I used the Cobalt oxide. You need to wear gloves when handling oxides because they are toxic. Now I have to wait for it to be high fired.
